Wiphala
Colection of prints and products that brings the values
of the andean vernacular design to the contemporary design
The Wiphala project brings the andean vernacular design elements to the contemporary graphic design, creating semantic values to the products where
it is applied.
The semantic values obtained through
the manual techniques of the andean vernacular design were applied in a book about the visual culture of the Andes and in a surface design editorial.
The project also reaches de digital environment throught a website where
you can create your own prints based
on the visual created at the books.
The name Wiphala cames from the andean flag, that has a uncertain origin even to researchers, but means more than just an emblem to the Andes and Aymarás nations, being also a representation of the andean philosophy.
The flag's colors came from the rainbown and represent the cosmic universe, full of the plurality
of the south american native people.
The brand brings the manual techniques throught
its roughness and the hand-drawn symbol made
by brush, that allows to use the project prints as its fill, representing better what is the project.
Wiphala:
Cultura Visual Andina
In English: Wiphala: Andean Visual Culture
The book presents the andean visual culture, since the Tocapus (Inca period symbols) and
the fabrics, to the Chicha (andean vernacular typography) and the common graphics on trucks.
Its hard cover with andean fabric and the visible seam on the spine makes the vernacular's manual process visible.
The editorial project aims to present from where came from all the references used in the project, with visual and historic basis.
To enhance the lecture, the book also has interactive pages using features like andean frabric bounded with the pages.
Wiphala:
Além da Tradição
In English: Wiphala: Beyond Tradition
In a book bound as a binder, the prints show the characteristics and values
of the blend of the andean vernacular design and the contemporary design.
The prints are presented in 3 chapters: hand-made, digital-made and created throught Processing programming.
The chapters approach various methodologies and how much we
can explore them in each environment.
There were been created 24 prints with variations for each apply (in small and big surfaces, with color limitation, and others), and the book shows how they can be applied in real objects.
